All the matter — the Milky Way, Virgo, Andromeda are heading towards it. Virgo's gravity affects the movement of its neighbors, including the Local Group. The Virgo Cluster contains about a thousand galaxies, and spans about ten million light-years. Virgo SuperCluster. M 86 may be a lenticular S0 type instead. The Great Attractor is not a supermassive celestial body – a thing - but rather a volume of space that embodies the center of attraction – a place. It is centered on the Virgo cluster and extends some 150 million ly across. The universe is continuously being explored by astronomers and scientists. Although blue-white Spica is Virgo's only bright star, it is the 16th-brightest star in the night sky. Several giant elliptical galaxies inhabit the central regions of the Virgo Cluster. For more distant spirals, masses can be inferred from observations of the broadening of their spectral lines. The Virgo Cluster, the Local Group, and several other nearby clusters form the Local Supercluster.

The center of the Virgo cluster has three giant ellipticals, M 87 (bottom left corner) and M 84, M 86 (center right). the Virgo supercluster (see Figure 03-06). Virgo is known as a spring constellation because, although you can see some or all of its stars on most nights of the year, the stars put on their best display in the evening sky during spring. The Virgo cluster itself contains thousands of galaxies including M87 (right), which is known to surround a gigantic black hole. M 86 may be a lenticular S0 type instead. Galaxy groups and clusters are the largest known gravitationally bound objects to have arisen thus far in the process of cosmic structure formation. Now, the Milky Way galaxy, which is our galaxy, is now part of a Local Group, where about thirty more galaxies are found.

The Great Attractor lies in the vicinity of the Norma Super Cluster.

This exploration and research endeavors have led to the discovery of many other galaxies and celestial phenomena that had been unknown to us for many years. The masses of nearby spiral galaxies can be determined by studying their rotation curves.
